The fresh cold water was very welcome. The views are pretty spectacular and while there is not a lot inside the castle the restoration of this castle seems fairly authentic. The woodwork has been done well and the construction is visible from inside. There are few tourists around. We got a taxi from the train station up about yen, since we had just missed the bus and it was baout an hour till the next one. I eneded up phoning the taxi to come and get us sometime later when we were leaving.

They were very courteous and no english. It's a 20 min upward climb to the castle from the shuttle bus station wear sneakers. The path can be muddy and slippery when wet. The scenery is very nice up the hill and the remaining buildings are all originals.

Worthwhile to go to the observation deck to view the castle from across the hill in the early morning, you may see a sea of clouds with the castle "floating" on top! Great hike and the castle is cool. It was nice to go in and not many tourists at all. I would go just for the hike and to do something outside of the tourist traps.

Matsuyama Castle sits on a steep, tree-covered hill in the center of Matsuyama City, and commands impressive views of the surrounding area and the Seto Inland Sea. In the spring, the castle is a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot. Unomachi is a small historic neighborhood in the town of Uwacho.

It is larger and has a more traditional feel than Uchiko, another of Ehime's charming preserved towns. During the Edo Period, Unomachi was home to artisans and merchants, and the town's agricultural and cypress hinoki products were well known. There are still many old townhomes known as machiya preserved for hundreds of years, as well as historic hotels, breweries and soy sauce makers with deep roots still in business to this day.

The shrine's honden main hall and other historic buildings are designated as Culture Properties of Japan. The shrine is one of only three examples of the Hachiman-zukuri architectural style, in which two parallel buildings are connected on the long side, giving the impression of one building.
